Seoul Halloween: At least 120 killed in festivities

At least 120 people are now reported to have been killed during Saturday night’s Halloween festivities in Seoul’s Itaewon neighborhood. Choi Seong-bum, chief of Yeonsan-gu Fire Department.

The chief minister added that at least 100 people were injured.

The cause of death was not immediately given, but the chief said many fell amid Halloween celebrations.

Yonhap News Agency earlier attributed the fire officials to people suffering from “cardiac arrest”. Emergency officials reported at least 81 people in Seoul’s Itaewon area with “difficulty breathing.”

Officials are yet to provide exact details about the cause of the incident. The fire chief said that there was no gas leak or fire at the place. The cause of the incident is still under investigation.

Police cordoned off the area and social media videos showed people lying in the streets and on stretchers as first responders provided aid.

A total of 848 emergency response teams, including 364 firefighters and 400 police officers, have been dispatched, the fire chief said.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol dispatched a disaster medical assistance team to the Halloween incident, the presidential office said.

The president ordered officials to secure emergency beds at nearby hospitals and implement rapid rescue operations and treatment, presidential spokesman Lee Jae-myung told a briefing.

Yoon was in an emergency meeting about the situation, the office said in a statement.
