Match Report – Bridlington Town 3 – 3 Thackley

First Half

Bridlington Town looked to get their season off to a flying start with a home fixture against Thackley.

Town started out brightly, with several pressing attacks coming from Matt Broadley and Lewis Dennison down the flanks.

New signing Nathan Walker came closest to breaking the deadlock in the opening quarter, with a pacey run through on goal adjudged to be narrowly offside.

It wasn’t until the 15th minute that the goals would begin. Jack Normanton made a pacey run, beating his marker to the ball, and smartly sending the ball into the bottom corner of James Hitchcock’s goal.

It only took Town four minuted to find an equalizer, however. Broadley sent a corner floating above every player, including the visitor’s keeper Luke Wilson, and somehow managing to curl it into the top right of the goal.

Disaster struck on the 36th minute when a floated corner was cleared off the line by Town Captain Andy Norfolk, his strong header only made it far as Fraser Papprill, hitting him on the back of the head and bouncing into his own goal, giving Thackley the lead for a second time.

Charley Birley scored his first Town goal, again, just four minutes later. Broadley flicked on a header over the oncoming Thackley keeper, gifting Birley a tap in at the centre of the box.

Second Half

The second half opened in a similar fashion to the first, with both teams looking to get that all-important third goal.

Both teams could have quite easily scored, with a little luck on their side, after both managed to find themselves in perfect positions to score in front of an almost open goal. The first came to Thackley’s Jack Normanton, who somehow found himself with the ball inside the box, but his shot went tamely around the wrong side of the post. A minute later at the other end of the pitch Broadley somehow managed to miscontrol a pass inside the box with only the keeper to beat, sending the ball harmlessly out for a goal kick.

In a rare breakdown in communication in the Town defence, Thackley found themselves with a 3-2 lead. A simple cross which on any other day would have been an easy claim for the keeper managed to find its way to Ben Grech-Brooksbank, after Hitchcock and his defence awaited the other to make the claim for the ball.

This time it took Town twenty minutes to get the score level, though. After being brought down inside the box by Jerome White, who received a Yellow Card for the challenge, Nathan Walker stepped up to the spot and managed to send the visitor’s keeper the wrong way with a driving penalty into the right side of the goal.

Town pressed hard for the final five minutes, plus added, to get a winner, but it was not meant to be, and both sides left the game with a hard fought point a piece.

Next Up

Town are on the road next Saturday where they will face West Auckland Town in the FA Cup. They will return to the Hudgell Solicitors Stadium on the 20th of August for their mid-week fixture against Athersley Recreation.
