Humberside Police are investigating the death of a wallaby which was kept in the Animal Education Centre at East Park in Hull.
The wallaby was found unwell by the Centre’s staff on Friday 23 February and was taken to a vet who humanely put it to sleep. Sadly it was carrying a joey which also died. A post mortem examination (the results of which were made available on 5 March) found an air pellet in the animal’s skull which caused its death. The pellet is thought to have been there for over a week.
On being informed of the results of the post mortem Police began an investigation into offences under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 (animal cruelty) and of trespass and criminal damage. It is thought that an intruder broke into East Park overnight sometime between Saturday 10 and Tuesday 20 February and shot the wallaby while it was in its pen.
Humberside Police want to hear from anyone who has information that would help find out who is responsible. If you know anything that would help the investigation please call 101 quoting log 227 05/03/18.
