Hull City Council has received funding to help improve the environmental standards in Hull.
The funding was awarded after concerns were raised by residents about the standards of housing and the environment in the area.
Funding of £400,000 was awarded by the Department for Communities and Local Government. The funds will be used to develop projects in areas that are falling behind standards.
Councillor Alan Clark, who is the Portfolio Holder for Streetscene said:
We welcome this funding to help tackle environmental standards in the city. It will give the council the opportunity to work more closely with communities to support them in seeking to improve their quality of living.
With the help of this funding we can support and engage with all areas of the community with a view to empowering residents and encouraging the longer established residents and landlords to take ownership of their local area, leading to long-term benefits for all.
How Will It Help?
The funding will be used to help prevent issues such as repeat fly-tipping and poor waste containment. It will help reduce the amount of waste on private land and household forecourts. Areas such as Newland, Myton, St Andrews, Newington, University, and Avenue will be set to benefit from the addition of extra wardens. Four new wardens will be recruited, along with a team leader, to work in these hot-spot areas.
There has also been provisions made for two housing enforcement officers, who will take a ‘zero-tolerance’ approach to rogue landlords. This is hoped to help improve the situation with tenant exploitation and overcrowding in the region.
