A Weekend For The Whole Family

Councillor Richard Burton, the portfolio holder for leisure, tourism, and culture said:

The Weekend of Christmas is going to be a superb way to start your December, and your festive celebrations! I know this will be a popular event, with something for everybody, featuring everything relating from the traditional to the modern, from the history of our Christmas to the excitement of husky sled rides.

Sewerby Hall itself will be decorated festively and also features a brand new exhibition; The Making of Christmas. This new exhibition will explore how the Victorians adopted some of the ancient customs and traditions and created some of their own, which created the modern-day ideal Christmas.

Sewerby Hall’s curator, Janice Smith, went into further detail about the exhibition, saying:

The idea of Christmas evokes scenes of jolly old Santa and perfectly wrapped presents; a cosy room with a log fire burning brightly; a scented fir tree laden with baubles and twinkling lights; Christmas dinner; crackers; Christmas cards from all your friends; a kiss under the mistletoe and so on, yet have you ever considered who put all these ideas together? This exhibition will give you the answers!

To find the exhibition head down to the West Wing Gallery. The exhibition will be open through the Weekend of Christmas event, from 11am to 4pm.

Entry Fees

Most of the events held on the Weekend of Christmas are completely free, however the usual rates of entry to Sewerby Hall and Gardens will still apply. Entry is £5.60 for adults and £3.80 for children, or you can buy a family pass for £18.
